What is efflorescence?

Efflorescence is a white, powdery mineral deposit that forms on concrete and masonry surfaces when salts are drawn to the surface by moisture and then evaporate.

When water carries dissolved salts through concrete or brick and then evaporates at the surface, it leaves behind a white, chalky mineral deposit known as efflorescence. This occurs because moisture naturally migrates through porous masonry materials, carrying salts that crystallize as the water dries.
