What is PSI (pounds per square inch)?

PSI (pounds per square inch) is the unit of measurement for water pressure force in pressure washing equipment, indicating how much force water exerts per square inch of surface area.

Pounds per square inch, or PSI, measures the force at which water exits a pressure washer nozzle. It tells you how much pressure the equipment can deliver to a surface, and it matters because different cleaning jobs need different levels of force.

Residential pressure washers typically operate between 1,500 and 3,000 PSI. This range handles most household tasks like cleaning decks, siding, and driveways without damaging common materials. Commercial and industrial equipment usually operates at 3,000 PSI and above, sometimes reaching 4,000 PSI or higher for tougher jobs like concrete cleaning or stripping paint.

Higher PSI does not automatically mean better cleaning. Excessive pressure can gouge wood, pit concrete, strip paint prematurely, or damage vinyl siding. The right PSI depends on the surface being cleaned and what you are removing from it. Soft surfaces like wood siding need lower pressure to avoid etching and splintering.
